Alabama

The bear. A simple word that when mentioned in college football circles refer to many the best head football coach in the history of the game. Paul "Bear" Bryant's Alabama Crimson Tide synonymous and one can argue that he was the man who really made a household name Alabama. Bryant was undoubtedly the most successful coach in the history of the Southeastern Conference Alabama with their teams dominating the conference during his tenure with the tide. Bear Bryant began his coaching career at the University of Maryland in 1945. Bryant led the team to a successful season at 6-2-1 in his first season, but left the job because of a power struggle with the university president and the first Bryant decided it would be better used elsewhere and left after one season. Bryant left Maryland and went to coach at the University of Kentucky. Kentucky is where Bryant began to be known as a football coach. Bryant lead Kentucky to their bowl game for the first time in his second season as head coach in 1947. He enjoyed his greatest success in 1950, when he led the team to its first title in the Southeastern Conference and beat the Oklahoma Sooners in their bowl game, while Oklahoma was ranked the number one team in the nation. While Bryant would not be alive to receive the honor, the Kentucky Wildcats were awarded the national championship for the season 1950 in 2005. All players living Bryant were there to receive the award for the team. Bryant would leave Kentucky in 1954 amid denials by the department integration of sports. He went to coach Texas A & M as well as being named the Athletic Director. Bryant was only three years, but his first team was immortalized in a film called The Junction Boys ESPN. The Junction Boys covered his first season at Texas A & M, with Bryant as head coach. Bryant had more than 100 players to training camp in Junction, Texas, during a heat wave where temperatures normally reach over 100 degrees. The practice proved too much for many of the players, almost 70 players leaving the football program because of the intense conditions. Bryant was always known for his nonsense attitude not, but this reinforced the fact. Bryant was at Texas A & M for three years before becoming the coach of Alabama in 1958. Bryant coached at Alabama for 25 years, winning six national championship titles and thirteen SEC. Bryant became the Alabama Crimson Tide a household name and became arguably the best coach in college football history. When he retired in 1982, was the all-time leader in wins with 315, which has been approved by the likes of Bobby Bowden and Joe Paterno. Bryant left the legacy of Alabama is immeasurable, became a respected school in southern Red Tide turned in by far the most recognized program throughout college football. To that end, Bryant is remembered as the biggest Crimson Tide to be involved in the football program.
